DoT tries to put broadband on track
Internet News The department of telecom (DoT) has acknowledged the failure of its broadband policy and is seeking industry inputs to rescript the sector’s growth path.

Broadband and internet is one of the worst performing sectors under the DoT, contrasting sharply with the tremendous success achieved in mobile telephony which is clocking a near 8 to 10 million subscribers every month.

The policy collapse is illustrated by the fact that at the end of 2007 India barely reached 10.36 million internet subscribers against the target of 18 million, while broadband penetration touched 3.13 million against the target of 9 million subscribers.

Telcos, ISPs lock horns over IP telephony
Even before the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has taken its first steps towards allowing connectivity between PCs and phones, telecom operators and Internet service providers (ISPs) are locking horns over the issue.

In separate communications to the regulator, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications have stated that if voice over Internet protocol—or, VoIP, which basically means using the Internet for telephone calls—is allowed, ISPs should be asked to migrate to the unified access service licence (UASL) regime.

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has gone even further to state that PC-to-phone calls should be disallowed, as it would destroy the national long-distance structure.
